Maxus is one of several well-known brands under the SAIC Motor Corporation, China’s largest vehicle manufacturer, which sold over 5.3 million vehicles in 2022.

The origins of Maxus date back to 1896, when vehicle production began in the UK with the British LDV brand. The Lancaster Steam Motor Company, based in Leyland, Lancashire, was later renamed Leyland Motors in 1907 and subsequently Leyland Motor Corporation, expanding into the production of petrol-powered trucks, buses, and electric trolleybuses.

The Maxus brand has strong British roots dating back to the creation of the Leyland Steam Van in 1896, followed by the founding of Leyland Motors in 1907. Over time, the company expanded into buses and commercial vehicles, establishing itself as a major force in the commercial transport sector.

With more than 120 years of heritage, Maxus has become one of Europe’s most recognised commercial vehicle brands. In 2009, SAIC acquired the commercial vehicle division of the British Motor Corporation, which included the LDV platform. In April 2020, the LDV brand was reintroduced as Maxus, continuing its legacy of performance, efficiency, and reliability.

When choosing towbar wiring, there are two main options available: Universal Aftermarket Wiring and Dedicated Vehicle-Specific Wiring.

Universal aftermarket wiring is the lower-cost option but comes with compromises. Dedicated vehicle-specific wiring—also known as plug-in kits or dedicated wiring looms—is increasingly popular and represents the correct solution for modern Maxus vehicles.

Vehicle-specific wiring integrates seamlessly with your Maxus’ onboard systems, enabling built-in safety features such as Trailer Stability Control and automatically disabling parking sensors while towing.

Each wiring kit is designed specifically for the vehicle it is fitted to. Unlike universal wiring, which often requires soldering or Scotch Locks, dedicated kits connect directly to the vehicle’s systems exactly as intended by the manufacturer.

If your Maxus is less than three years old or still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, vehicle-specific wiring is essential to protect that warranty.
